Transport and development

Transport is the act of moving from one location to another. As mobility is an evolutionary gift to us, we have been transporting ourselves and our needs for centuries. We have gone from inventing wheels to different modes of travel by our nature of exploration and invention. The need to transport/travel after established civilizations led to trading and transport through roadways and seaways were formed. Transport has always influenced occupations, living, and eventually cultural exchange.

The development of transportation has and is still revolutionizing work, travel, and social life. Transportation networks even today prove to be one of the fundamental tools for a country. The promise of jobs, prosperity, faster travel, and standard of living pulls people to cities.

Though this attraction has also created problems of overpopulation, traffic congestion, air pollution, and other increasing issues, which have put our urban environments under pressure.

Future technology

Due to issues of urban overcrowding, and the demands for faster travel services. Transport systems over the world are attempting to keep ahead of its masses, companies are introducing faster means and innovation in travel every year.

For instance, the introduction of the hyperloop has promised travel at the speed of sound, thus drastically improving urban infrastructure as well as housing problems of people traveling for jobs. Other modes of transport like smart roads, autonomous helicopters, elevated cycle paths, and super-trains are some upcoming technologies that are predicted to change the way transport systems work in the cities.

Cities have an impeccable ability to adapt to change. Invention and technological advancement over the years have always affected the way our cities function. The city over time influences its people, their ambitions, and the infrastructure to support it. With an increasing need to solve urban transport issues and the emergence of faster travel options, what will the transport networks in cities look like in 2100?

Brief of the competition

We have already imagined multiple versions of futuristic cities and their modes of transport from the 70s till now in novels, movies, and video games. While some influence real technologies others remain fragments of our imaginations.

With the advent of new technology every year, and humans talking about transport at the speed of light, what will the future of transport infrastructure look like? How will it influence our visions and imaginations of the future?

As architects, designers, creators, and visionaries how do we see this future unfolding in terms of transport infrastructure?

Brief: The challenge is to visualize the transport infrastructure of a city set in 2100.

Produce realistic visions of the infrastructure of transport, its mode (air, water, land), and means (vehicles/pods, etc.). Also envision a city as the background for the transport infrastructure. Use any mediums, video, images, drawings, sketches, models, paintings — and communicate your design.

Design objectives

  • Research: Research and investigate the upcoming transport technologies, possible upgrades, and adaptations in the coming future. Also, study the relationship between transport and how it affects people.
  • Technical: Try to express through design/engineering how the transport network works and functions.
  • Expression: The graphic should effectively communicate its intent and landscape to the viewer.

Any of the techniques mentioned in the brief may be utilized to achieve the desired outcome. The more creative the method, the better.

Compositional outline

The usage of photographs, stylized/credited or otherwise, directly is strictly not allowed.

The use of lassoed graphics lifted from an existing image is limited to one-third of the total graphic.
